COURSES AND WORKSHOPS
Hanna Poikonen pursued her PhD in neuroscience of movement, dance and music (Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, Finland), receiving her degree in May 2018. During the years 2008-2013, she worked in brain research and education focusing on learning and creativity at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich, Switzerland). She has also pursued the Postgraduate degree in Art Therapy at the Metáfora in Barcelona.
Hanna is originally from Finland, but movement practice and science have taken her to live in Australia, Singapore and Switzerland. For eight years, she is based in Barcelona. She has studied movement and dance in cities such as New York (Gibney Dance, Movement Research), Barcelona (La Caldera, Institut del Teatre), Montreal (Circuit-Est Centre Chorégraphique) and Berlin (Marameo). Explorations in kung fu, tai chi, butoh and somatic methods have taught her a holistic approach to the body and mind.
WiseMotion is a method developed by Dr. Hanna Poikonen which improves physical abilities, self-awareness and embodied collaboration through movement and neuroscience. Each workshop is based on guided improvisation, neuroscientific explanation of the experience, and a group conversation. On a WiseMotion workshop, experience and knowledge come together and deepen understanding by utilizing the wisdom of both subjective experience and objective knowledge.
Hanna has taught the WiseMotion method from 13 to 82-year-old participants in Europe, North America and Asia. WiseMotion has been featured at Harvard Medical School, TU Berlin, Institut del Teatre (Barcelona), Kuopio Dance Festival (Finland) and Alive Wellness (Hong Kong) among others.
DANCE, BODY AND THE BRAIN -LECTURE
Friday 13.9. klo 14-15.30
On the lecture, doctor Hanna Poikonen welcomes us to the fascinating world of the neuroscience of dance. We understand both the spectator's and dancer's experience and the brain processes of creativity. We go through the possibilities of dance in rehabilitation and as a tool in education.
WISEMOTION EXPERTS -WORKSHOP
Friday 13.9. klo 11-12.30
Price: 35 € / 20 € JoJo’s membership price
EMOTIONS IN THE BODY AND BRAIN
We take a tour from embodied affection to the neural correlations of emotions. Emotions vary in the scales of intensity and pleasure, modifying brain functions. Deeper brain structures, which are crucial in emotional states, have an influence on the functioning of sensory cortices. Thus, the mental state of any given moment plays an important role in the perception of our surroundings. Understanding our own emotional processes in the body and brain helps us to better manage and negotiate our environment.
WISEMOTION EXPLORERS -WORKSHOP
Saturday 14.9. klo 10-13
Price: 50 € / 35 € JoJo’s membership price
Workshop for everyone interested in stress relief and memory improvement,is divided into two parts. Both units last for 90 minutes and are held one after the other, as one workshop.
EMOTION, COGNITION AND MOVEMENT INTERTWINED IN THE BRAIN (ALLEVIATING STRESS)
Different brain regions play a distinct role in processes of movement anticipation, preparation and execution. Interaction of these regions enables smooth movements in the everyday life. Importantly, these interactions are improved by adequate training. Many motor brain regions are also involved in cognitive and emotional processes. In addition, the brain regions of movement have vast and immediate connections to other regions in charge of cognition and emotion.
During the workshop, we learn how different brain regions interact to create complex continuous movements. We understand how movement can be used in enhancing the cognitive performance and emotional well-being. We also come to understand stress in the brain as part of a holistic state, discovering methods to relieve that stress.
MEMORY, CONCENTRATION AND THE BRAIN (IMPROVING MEMORY)
Nowadays, problems in attention and concentration are on the rise. A lifestyle requiring constant distribution of attention and denying possibilities to concentrate on one thing at the time is overloading the brain. On the other hand, the brain needs an adequate amount of cognitive challenge. Attention can be improved, and the aging of the brain can be slowed down by an optimal combination of versatile training and rest. On this workshop, we find fascinating methods to maintain cerebral health in the long run.
